POSITION: ASSISTANT NUTRITION OFFICER

Location: Various

Reporting to: Nutrition Program Officer

Duty Station: Blantyre, Lilongwe, Machinga, Mangochi, Phalombe, Thyolo and Zomba

Nature of Contract : 6 Month Fixed-term

Supervises: None

Minimum Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Job Summary: Assistant Nutrition Officer (ANO) supports implementation of community-based nutrition programs for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) such as Children Living with HIV (CLHIV), HIV exposed Infants (HEI) and other vulnerable children under the age of 5 years and caregivers, including screening, referrals, and education. Provides counselling on healthy feeding practices, collects and reports nutrition data, and collaborates with Community Case Workers (CCWs) or community volunteers and health facility staff to strengthen nutrition services. The ANO will be closely working in collaboration with the ANAPA Social Welfare officer and Community Linkage Coordinators, and under the supervision of the Nutrition and WASH Specialist with dotted lines to the District Team Leader. The ANO will be based in ANAPA Supported districts Blantyre, Chikwawa, Lilongwe, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, Phalombe, Thyolo and Zomba.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: –

Program Implementation Support

Support the implementation of nutrition activities for OVC and caregivers at community and household level.

Assist in identifying and screening OVC for malnutrition using approved nutrition assessment tools.

Support referral of malnourished children and caregivers to health facilities for appropriate treatment.

Assist in integrating nutrition education within OVC case management activities.

Nutrition Education and Counselling

Provide basic nutrition education and counselling to OVC caregivers and adolescents mums living with HIV.

Promote appropriate infant and young child feeding practices.

Support awareness activities on nutrition and healthy feeding practices for people living with HIV.

Monitoring and Data Collection

Collect and record nutrition-related data during community visits and outreach activities.

Assist in maintaining accurate records of beneficiaries receiving nutrition services.

Support preparation of weekly and monthly activity reports.

Community Engagement

Work with PHNAO, Child protection Workers (CPWs), Community Case Workers, District Surveillance and Control Assistants (DSCA), community volunteers, caregivers, and local leaders to promote nutrition interventions.

Identify, screen, and refer malnourished CLHIV or HEI from HIV-affected households to appropriate nutrition services.

Participate in community outreach activities, growth monitoring sessions, and nutrition campaigns.

Support linkage of OVC households to community nutrition services.

Capacity Building Support

Assist the Nutrition and WASH Specialist and Nutrition Program officer in organizing training sessions for community volunteers and caregivers.

Support mentorship of community workers on basic nutrition practices.

Coordination and Collaboration

Work closely with Child protection Workers, Community Case Workers, Facility and Community health workers and community volunteers.

Support coordination of nutrition activities with other components of the OVC program.

Minimum Qualifications, Experience and required skills: –

Diploma in Nutrition, Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Public Health, Food Science, or related field.

At least 1–2 years of experience in community-based nutrition or health programs.

Experience working with OVC programs, HIV programs, or community health initiatives is an added advantage.

Experience working with the local communities

Understanding of community management of acute malnutrition

Computer skills knowledge and applications especially Ms Word and Excel
