POSITION: PLANT & WORKSHOP MANAGER


Location: Lilongwe



On behalf of our client, we are recruiting a Plant and Workshop Manager.


Nature of Contract: 3 Years Fixed Term

Duty Station: Head Office, Lilongwe


Reporting to: General Manager / Operations Manager

Department: Workshop


Job Summary

To oversee the daily operations of the workshop, ensuring all vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, repaired, and serviced to minimise downtime and support efficient operations.


Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee the day-to-day management of the mechanical workshop, including maintenance and repair of vehicles, trucks, heavy plant equipment, and machinery.

• Supervise and lead a team of technicians and mechanics to ensure high standards of performance, availability, and safety.

• Manage and coordinate scheduled services and preventative maintenance programs for all vehicles, trucks, machinery, and heavy plant equipment.

• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.

• Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

• Develop and manage the workshop’s operational budgets, resources, and inventory of spare parts.

• Liaise with vendors, customers, and intercompany departments to ensure high-quality service delivery.

• Prepare computer-generated reports on performance, maintenance schedules, and equipment status.


Qualifications & Skills:

• Proven experience in managing mechanical workshops and heavy plant equipment in challenging countries/regions, preferably in a supervisory role.

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plant/Heavy Equipment Engineering, or Automotive Engineering (Diesel Focus). Candidates with a Diploma should have not less than 10 years of experience.

• Strong and proven technical expertise in mechanical and electronic vehicle, truck, and plant equipment maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.

• Proven leadership and team management skills.

• In-depth understanding of safety protocols and regulations in heavy machinery operations.

• Ability to handle operational budgets in a tight fiscal environment, procurement planning, and scheduling of all responsibilities.

• High level of computer literacy.

• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.

• Prior experience in the construction, mining, and agricultural sectors is an added advantage.

• Excellent spoken and written English communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, challenging, and high-pressure environment.

• Malawi citizen/resident is an advantage but not essential.
