Position: SME Collections Officer
Reports to: Branch Manager
Job Purpose
The SME Collections Officer will be responsible for managing and recovering delinquent SME loan accounts through member engagement, portfolio monitoring, and implementation of effective recovery strategies. The role aims to minimize credit risk, reduce non-performing loans, and support the financial sustainability of the SACCO.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Loan Recovery and Follow-ups
- Follow up overdue SME loans through calls, SMS, emails, and physical visits
- Remind members about missed or upcoming repayments
Account Monitoring and Client Engagement
- Monitor SME loan accounts and ageing reports to identify arrears
- Track daily, weekly, and monthly collection targets
- Maintain accurate records of all recovery activities
- Educate SME members on loan terms and repayment schedules
- Handle repayment-related queries and complaints professionally
- Maintain ethical and professional conduct when dealing with members
Field Collections
- Conduct field visits to SME members’ businesses and residences
- Verify business operations, cash flows, and member information
- Serve reminder letters and demand notices where necessary
Reporting
- Prepare reports on arrears, recoveries, and default trends
- Escalate chronic defaulters to supervisors
- Recommend loan restructures, write-offs, or legal action where applicable
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure all collection activities comply with institutional policies and regulations
- Avoid harassment or unethical collection practices
- Support fraud detection by reporting suspicious member activities
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in SME loan collections or credit management
- Knowledge of SME operations, cash flow cycles, and business environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- High level of integrity and reliability
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills
- Basic understanding of risk management and collections processes
