Job Title: Grader Operator (1)

Nature of Contract: One Year Fixed Term

Duty Station: Rumphi

Reporting to: Earthworks Foreman/Site Manager

Department: Plant & Machine/Operations

Job Summary

To operate a motor grader safely and efficiently in the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of roads and

other civil engineering works. The Grader Operator is responsible for achieving the required levels, slopes, and

surface finishes while ensuring compliance with company procedures and Malawi's occupational safety standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate a motor grader for road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects.

• Carry out rough and final grading of road formations, subgrades, shoulders, drainage channels, and

embankments.

• Maintain the required road camber, cross-fall, and finished levels in accordance with engineering

specifications.

• Read and follow site drawings, survey pegs, and instructions from supervisors.

• Conduct daily pre-start and post-operation inspections of the grader.

• Perform routine maintenance, including checking engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, tyres, cutting edges,

and fuel levels.

• Report equipment defects, breakdowns, and maintenance requirements immediately.

• Complete daily equipment inspection checklists and production reports.

• Ensure efficient use of fuel and minimize machine wear and tear.

• Work closely with surveyors, site engineers, and other equipment operators to achieve project targets.

• Observe all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.

• Maintain good housekeeping around the machine and work area.

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Earthworks Foreman or Site Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

• Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent.

• Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate specializing in Grader Operation from a recognized

institution.

• Valid Malawi Driver's Licence (appropriate class for heavy equipment operation).

• Training in Occupational Safety and Health is an added advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years' experience operating a motor grader on road construction or civil engineering

projects.

• Experience working on projects funded by Government, donor agencies, or private contractors is an

added advantage.

• Familiarity with GPS-controlled grading systems will be an added advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

• Good knowledge of road construction and earthworks techniques.

• Ability to operate graders safely and efficiently under varying site conditions.

• Basic knowledge of preventative maintenance for heavy equipment.

• Ability to interpret construction drawings, levels, and site instructions.

• Good communication and teamwork skills.

• Ability to work under minimum supervision.

• Strong commitment to quality workmanship and safety.
