POSITION: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN




Blantyre Baptist Church, a member of the Baptist Convention in Malawi, which operates well-established primary schools and Blantyre Baptist Academy in Blantyre, invites applications from suitably qualified, dynamic, and experienced individuals to fill the position of Laboratory Technician based at Blantyre Baptist Academy, Nancholi.


Job Title: Laboratory Technician


Reports To:

Principal/ Deputy Principal (Academics)/ Head of Science Department


Duty Station:

Blantyre Baptist Academy Laboratory


 

Job Purpose


To support effective teaching and learning of science subjects by managing laboratory operations, preparing practical materials, maintaining equipment and ensuring safety standards in the school laboratories.



Key Duties and Responsibilities


1) Laboratory Preparation and Support


Prepare laboratory apparatus, chemicals, specimens and materials for practical lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Assist teachers and students during practical sessions and demonstrations.

Set up experiments according to lesson requirements and practical schedules.

Support administration of internal practical examinations.

 


2) Laboratory Management


Maintain laboratories in a clean, orderly and functional condition.

Organize storage of chemicals, reagents, tools and laboratory equipment.

Keep accurate inventories of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Monitor stock levels and prepare requisitions for laboratory materials and consumables.

Receive, inspect and record laboratory supplies delivered to the school.

 


3) Safety and Compliance


Ensure adherence to laboratory safety rules and procedures.

Handle, label, store and dispose of chemicals and hazardous materials properly.

Maintain first aid kits, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment in laboratories.

Report hazards, accidents or damaged equipment promptly.

Promote occupational health and safety standards in line with Ministry of Education regulations.

 


4) Equipment Maintenance


Clean, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Identify faulty or damaged apparatus and arrange for repairs or replacement.

Ensure proper custody and security of laboratory assets.

 


5) Administrative Responsibilities


Maintain laboratory records, stock registers, accident logs and practical records.

Assist in budgeting and procurement planning for laboratory needs.

Prepare reports relating to laboratory usage, maintenance and resource requirements.

Support implementation of school policies relating to science laboratories.

 


6) Student and Teacher Support


Guide students on proper use and care of laboratory equipment.

Support science teachers in developing practical activities.

Assist science clubs, fairs and innovation projects where applicable.

 


Qualifications and Experience


Diploma in Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.

Must be registered with Medical Council of Malawi

At least 2 years’ relevant experience in a laboratory environment, preferably in an educational institution (added advantage).

Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and handling of chemicals.

 


Knowledge, Skills and Competencies


Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics laboratory procedures.

Laboratory equipment handling and maintenance skills.

Inventory and record management skills.

Attention to detail and accuracy.

Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Integrity, responsibility and professionalism.

Basic computer literacy is an added advantage.

 


Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)


Availability and readiness of laboratory materials for practical lessons.

Compliance with laboratory safety standards.

Proper maintenance and accountability of laboratory equipment.

Accuracy of stock and laboratory records.

Support provided to effective delivery of practical science education.

 


Terms and Conditions


Appointment shall be subject to school service conditions and applicable Malawi labor laws.

The officer may perform other related duties assigned by school management from time to time.
