POSITION: ROLLER OPERATOR 

Location: Rumphi

The company has a vacancy at its Project Site in Rumphi:

Job Title: Roller Operator (1)

Nature of Contract: 12 months Fixed Term

Duty Station: Rumphi

Reporting to: Construction Manager/Project Manager

Department: Construction/Operations

Job Purpose

The Roller Operator is responsible for operating road rollers and compaction equipment to 

compact soil, gravel, asphalt, and other construction materials during road construction, 

building, and civil engineering projects. The role ensures that compaction work is carried out 

safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Equipment Operation

• Operate roller compaction equipment safely and efficiently. 

• Compact soil, gravel, crushed stone, asphalt, and other materials to specified densities 

and levels. 

• Follow project plans, site instructions, and compaction requirements. 

• Adjust rolling patterns, speed, and vibration settings to achieve required compaction 

standards. 

• Perform work in accordance with construction schedules and operational 

requirements. 

• Equipment Inspection and Maintenance

• Conduct daily pre-start and post-operation inspections of the roller. 

• Check fuel, oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, and tyre/drum conditions. 

• Identify and report equipment defects, breakdowns, or maintenance requirements. 

• Maintain cleanliness of the equipment and work area. 

• Complete equipment inspection and maintenance records as required. 

Health and Safety Compliance

• Operate machinery in compliance with company safety policies and applicable 

regulations. 

• Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE). 

• Observe site safety signs, traffic management plans, and operational procedures. 

• Report accidents, incidents, hazards, and near misses promptly

• Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks. 

Quality Control

• Ensure compaction work meets project specifications and engineering requirements. 

• Work closely with surveyors, supervisors, and quality control personnel. 

• Avoid over-compaction or under-compaction of materials. 

• Assist in correcting identified defects or non-conforming work. 

• Assist with site preparation and construction activities as directed. 

• Coordinate with other equipment operators and construction workers. 

• Maintain effective communication with supervisors regarding work progress. 

• Support efficient utilization of equipment and resources. 

Qualifications and Experience

• Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent. 

• Valid operator's licence or certification for heavy equipment operation is an added 

advantage. 

• Minimum of 2 years' experience operating rollers or other heavy construction 

equipment. 

• Experience in road construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure projects is 

preferred. 

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of compaction techniques and construction materials. 

• Ability to operate both static and vibratory rollers. 

• Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements. 

• Ability to read and follow site instructions. 

• Good communication and teamwork skills. 

• Basic mechanical knowledge for routine equipment checks.
