VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT @ Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW)

POSITION: Digital Repository Officer (2 Positions)

Location: Blantyre, Malawi

Employment Type: Full-Time Contract (3 Months, with possible 3-month extension based on performance)

Overview

The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognized research and training institution funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the University of Liverpool (UoL), and other partners.

The MLW Library is seeking to recruit two Digital Repository Officers to support the management of its Digital Repository (DSpace-CRIS). The successful candidates will assist in creating metadata, reviewing, uploading, and organizing digital research outputs under the supervision of the Library Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Repository Content Management

  • Create accurate bibliographic information and metadata in DSpace-CRIS following institutional and international metadata standards.
  • Upload and organize research outputs, including journal articles, conference papers, theses, dissertations, reports, datasets, and other scholarly materials.
  • Link publications to the appropriate researchers, research groups, departments, projects, and research themes.
  • Maintain the quality, organization, and discoverability of repository content.

Content Quality Assurance

  • Review metadata records for completeness, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Identify and correct metadata errors, duplicate records, and inconsistencies.
  • Ensure compliance with repository metadata standards and controlled vocabularies.

Copyright & Access Rights Support

  • Verify copyright status and licensing permissions before uploading full-text materials.
  • Apply appropriate Creative Commons licenses and repository access permissions.
  • Ensure compliance with publisher requirements.

Reporting

  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports on repository growth, usage, and research output deposits.
  • Perform any other digital library-related duties assigned by the Library Manager.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Computer Science, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Familiarity with DSpace-CRIS, metadata standards, or research data management will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years' relevant experience.
  • Basic knowledge of database management systems.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.

Key Competencies

  • Strong understanding of Open Access publishing and scholarly communication.
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly in institutional repositories and research data management.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
