Position: Research Assistant – SME Needs Assessment

Location: Project districts across Malawi — exact districts to be determined based on the approved sampling framework and selected SME sample

Assignment Details:

Number of Positions: 12
Duration: 12 days, starting 12 August 2026, subject to project schedule.
Project: SME Needs Assessment for Standard Bank PLC.

Applicants should possess:

Minimum Diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Entrepreneurship/Business Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Development Studies, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience conducting at least five similar needs assessments, baseline/endline surveys, or structured socio-economic/SME surveys.
Previous experience using digital data collection platforms such as KoboToolbox, ODK, SurveyCTO, or similar platforms.
Understanding of research ethics, informed consent, confidentiality and data quality assurance.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability and willingness to travel to assigned field locations.
Functional smartphone with good battery life and sufficient storage capacity for digital data collection.

Research Assistants will be responsible for:

Supporting the implementation of the SME Needs Assessment.
Collecting accurate and high-quality data using approved digital data collection tools.
Conducting interviews in accordance with approved survey instruments and research protocols.
Ensuring compliance with research ethics, including informed consent, confidentiality and data quality requirements.
Maintaining high standards of data quality throughout the assignment.
Submitting completed questionnaires and field reports within agreed timelines.
Working closely with supervisors and the project team to ensure successful delivery of the assignment.
