POSITION: INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT OFFICER (MEDICAL)


Location: Lilongwe







 THE ORGANISATION

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA), established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011, is Malawi’s Nuclear and Radiation regulatory body mandated to protect the public, workers, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. AERA aims to be an excellent regulatory authority in Nuclear and Radiation protection and is seeking qualified, experienced, and results-oriented individuals to fill the following position tenable at its Lilongwe office.


1.   Inspection and Enforcement Officer (Medical) – Grade AE4


      Number of Posts         :      One (1)


      Reporting to            :      Inspection and Enforcement Manager


      Age                    :      Not more than 35 years


 Purpose of the Job     To implement inspection and enforcement program in Medical facilities.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

Conduct both scheduled and adhoc inspections of Medical facilities using radiation generating equipment and sources to ensure compliance with national regulations and licence conditions;

Monitor the safe use, storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting equipment;

Monitoring compliance with the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;

Compiling inspection and other technical reports and recommending improvements where there is non-compliance;

Ensuring that suitable remedial actions are implemented in the event of non-compliance;

Identify potential radiation hazard and recommend practical safety measures to ensure protection of people, environment and the public in medical facilities;

Provide technical advice on radiation safety in medical applications such as Diagnostics, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine;

Recommending enforcement action to be taken where there has been serious violation of the Act and Regulations as well as license and permit conditions issued by AERA;

Investigate incidents, accidents, or suspected violations involving radiation sources in medical facilities;

Support emergency preparedness and response activities related to radiation incidents;

Maintain and update regulatory records and inspection data for medical facilities; and

Assisting in drafting and interpreting regulatory regulations and standard operating procedures governing medical radiation safety.

Minimum required qualifications and work experience


A Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Imaging (Radiography)or Medical Imaging and radiation Sciences from an accredited institution recognized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Relevant professional registration or membership with a recognised professional body.

2 years’ working experience in radiation safety, inspection, regulatory compliance and enforcement.
