OVERVIEW

The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a leading institution in health and allied sciences, dedicated to training highly skilled professionals who are globally competitive and responsive to local healthcare needs.

KUHeS operates client-focused clinics in Blantyre and Lilongwe as part of its strategic income-generating initiatives. The Blantyre Clinic, located at Mount Pleasant, is supported by a strong multidisciplinary team of over thirty specialist doctors across various fields of medicine.

Following the recent expansion of its services to include a fully equipped Dental Unit, the KUHeS Clinic is inviting applications from suitably qualified, motivated and experienced individuals to fill the position of:

DENTIST

Position Summary

The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering high-quality oral healthcare services through diagnosis, treatment planning and the provision of routine and specialized dental procedures. The role includes performing restorative and cosmetic treatments, prescribing medications, promoting oral health education and maintaining accurate patient records.

The successful candidate will work closely with other healthcare professionals through referrals and consultations, support dental specialists where required, contribute to student mentorship and report writing, and support the efficient operation of the dental clinic.

Contract Duration

The successful candidate will be offered a one-year contract, renewable upon satisfactory performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will, among other duties:

- Conduct comprehensive oral and dental examinations and interpret diagnostic imaging, including X-rays.

- Develop and implement appropriate patient-centred treatment plans.

- Provide preventive, periodontal, restorative and cosmetic dental services, including teeth whitening, bonding and veneers.

- Perform clinical procedures including uncomplicated tooth extractions, fillings, root canal treatments, crowns, bridges, full and partial dentures, and dental implant placement.

- Prescribe and administer medications to manage pain, prevent and treat oral infections, and support patient recovery.

- Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices and preventive dental care.

- Measure, design and fit dental appliances for both children and adults where required.

- Maintain accurate, detailed and up-to-date patient records.

- Deliver the highest standards of patient-centred care and ensure a positive and professional clinical experience.

- Manage referred cases and facilitate continuity and coordination of care.

- Make timely and appropriate referrals to specialists and seek feedback to improve patient outcomes.

- Support dental specialists during consultations and surgical procedures where required.

- Participate in the mentorship and supervision of students and junior staff.

- Ensure compliance with regulatory, ethical and clinical governance requirements.

- Prepare and contribute to clinical reports and other relevant documentation.

Required Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

Applicants must have:

- A Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from a recognised institution.

- Registration and good standing with the Medical Council of Malawi.

- At least one year of post-qualification experience.

- Good administrative and organisational skills.

- Sound IT skills.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Excellent presentation skills.

- Willingness and ability to work effectively as part of a team.

- Enthusiasm for a career in academic dentistry.

- Flexibility to work in a fast-growing and changing environment.

- Ability and willingness to work during odd hours.

Training in Customer Service will be an added advantage.
