About AERA
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (AERA), established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 16 of 2011, is Malawi's Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Body mandated to protect the public, workers, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
Purpose of the Job
To implement inspection and enforcement programmes in industrial facilities utilizing radiation sources and ensure compliance with national regulations and licence conditions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct planned and ad-hoc inspections of industrial facilities.
- Monitor compliance with the Atomic Energy Act, regulations, licences, and permit conditions.
- Ensure safe use, storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting equipment.
- Compile inspection reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate radiation-related incidents, accidents, and violations.
- Recommend enforcement actions for serious non-compliance.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Provide technical advice on radiation safety in industrial applications.
- Implement section work plans and prepare periodic reports.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Nuclear Science, Physics, or Industrial Laboratory Technology from an NCHE-recognized institution.
- Minimum of one (1) year proven experience in radiation safety and security.
