Vacancy Announcement – Geologist (Gold Buying Trading Centres)

Organisation Background

The Export Development Fund (EDF) is a Development Finance Institution (DFI) mandated to promote the growth and diversification of Malawi’s exports. EDF’s mission is to support the Malawi economy through the provision of foreign trade solutions that enhance export diversification, international competitiveness, and inclusive growth.

EDF also plays a key role in job creation by investing in ambitious projects aimed at strengthening Malawi’s export sector.

As part of the Gold Buying Initiative expansion, EDF plans to establish Gold Buying Trading Centres (GTCs) in Blantyre, Mangochi, Mzimba, and Karonga.

EDF is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position below:

Position: Geologist

Reporting To:

Manager, Precious Metals and Minerals

Job Purpose

The Geologist is responsible for the accurate identification, assaying, weighing, and testing of gold presented at the Gold Buying Trading Centres (GTCs). The role ensures that only authentic gold meeting required standards is purchased, while maintaining integrity, accountability, and secure handling of gold in line with EDF operational procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct physical inspection and preliminary assessment of gold presented by suppliers.
  • Perform gold assaying using approved methods (e.g., fire assay, XRF, or other techniques).
  • Ensure all testing processes comply with EDF standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain proper documentation of all assays, tests, transactions, and reconciliation of gold stock.
  • Ensure safe handling and secure storage of gold at the GTC.
  • Prepare and submit technical reports on gold quality and assay results.
  • Provide technical guidance to Gold Buying Coordinators and other staff on gold quality matters.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in mineral analysis, gold assaying, or a related field.
  • Experience in gold trading, mining, or laboratory environments is an added advantage.

Employment Type

  • Two-year fixed-term contract
  • Possibility of renewal
