POSITION: FIELD OFFICER 

Location: Embangweni, Mzimba

OVERVIEW 

The Mzuzu Diocese Catholic Health Commission (MDCHC) is the social and health arm of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu. It exists to ensure that the health services provided by the Church across the Diocese are accessible to rural communities and delivered to professional standards, in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, the founder of the healing ministry.

MDCHC’s work spans three core mandates:

Coordinating the training of health personnel at its two health training colleges: St John of

God College of Health Sciences and St John’s College of Nursing and Midwifery.

Coordinating health services at its seven health facilities: St John’s Hospital, St John of God House of Hospitality, Mzambazi Community Hospital, Katete Community Hospital, Nkhamenya Community Hospital, St Patrick’s Health Centre and Padre Pio Health Centre.

Coordinating community health programmes, including HIV/AIDS, nutrition, early childhood development, orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), maternal and child health, water and sanitation, school health, and gender-based violence prevention.

In its efforts to ensure the provision of quality health services, MDCHC wishes to recruit a Field Officer for its water project, based in Embangweni.

Position Details

Job Title Field Officer

Reporting To Project Officer

Location Embangweni

Duration One-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate field operations for the water project.

Conduct regular field visits to verify the quality and accuracy of data collected by the programme team.

Gather and document quality evidence of programme implementation activities.

Implement and monitor programme activities, reporting results and anomalies observed in the field.

Support the programmes team in organizing and executing field activities.

Build and maintain good working relationships with local communities, stakeholders, and

Hold regular meetings with community members to understand their needs.

Develop monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual action plans for key health-related activities.

Work closely with key stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the project.

Maintain regular consultation and liaison with development partners and stakeholders at community and district level.

Provide technical assistance, capacity building, and supervision to partners and beneficiaries in community-based delivery.

Monitor progress of project activities at community and district level and measure milestones towards project outcomes.

Mobilize local communities to fully participate in project activities.

Compile and submit timely, accurate periodic reports to the Project Officer.

Qualifications and Experience

Diploma or Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Social Sciences, Community Development, or a related field.

At least 3 years of relevant experience as a Field Officer or in a similar role on community-based WASH or water projects.

Demonstrated experience in community mobilization and capacity building.

Knowledge of WASH infrastructure (e.g., boreholes, piped systems) is an added advantage.

Strong understanding of data collection methods, with proficiency in MS Office and basic data analysis.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and report-writing skills, with the ability to work across different teams and multi-task.

Willingness to work in remote rural communities, including harsh field conditions, with limited supervision.

A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Catholic values and principles.
