Job Title: Grader Operator (1)

Nature of Contract: 12 months Fixed Term

Duty Station: Rumphi

Reporting to: Site Manager/Site Agent/Plant & Workshop Manager

Department: Construction

Job Summary

The Grader Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a motor grader to

prepare, level, shape, and maintain roads, construction sites, drainage areas, and other

earthworks in accordance with project specifications and instructions from the site supervisor.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

o Operate the motor grader safely and efficiently on construction sites and road

projects.

o Grade, level, shape, and finish roads, shoulders, embankments, and other

surfaces to the required specifications.

o Carry out rough and fine grading according to drawings, levels, and site

instructions.

o Prepare surfaces for road base, sub-base, gravel, asphalt, or other construction

materials.

o Maintain correct slopes, cambers, gradients, and drainage profiles.

o Use grader controls and attachments appropriately for different construction

activities.

o Conduct daily pre-start inspections of the grader, including engine, hydraulics,

tyres, blade, steering, brakes, lights, and safety equipment.

o Perform basic operator-level maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and fluid

checks.

o Report mechanical defects, equipment damage, and safety hazards promptly.

o Ensure the grader is kept clean and in good working condition.

o Follow site traffic-management procedures and all health and safety

requirements.

o Work closely with surveyors, foremen, engineers, and other equipment

operators to achieve required levels and finishes.

o Avoid unnecessary damage to underground services, existing roads, drainage

structures, and other site infrastructure.

o Maintain daily equipment/plant operation records, including operating hours

and fuel usage where required.

o Operate the machine responsibly to minimize fuel consumption, wear, and

unnecessary downtime.

o Comply with Malawi road traffic requirements and company policies when operating equipment on public roads.

o Carry out other reasonable duties assigned by the Site Manager or Plant

Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

o Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent is an advantage.

o Relevant heavy equipment/motor grader operator training or certificate.

o Valid driving licence appropriate for operating or moving the equipment on public roads, where applicable.

o Minimum 2–3 years' experience operating a motor grader, preferably

on road construction or civil engineering projects.

o Experience with road formation, gravel roads, drainage, and earthworks is highly desirable.

o Knowledge of basic grader maintenance and troubleshooting.

o Experience working with construction drawings, site levels, or grade stakes is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

o Excellent motor grader operating skills.

o Good understanding of road construction and earthworks.

o Ability to achieve accurate levels, slopes, and gradients.

o Strong awareness of workplace and equipment safety.

o Basic mechanical knowledge.

o Good communication and teamwork skills.

o Ability to follow instructions accurately.

o Good judgment and attention to detail.

o Reliable, disciplined, and responsible.

o Ability to work long hours and under varying weather and site conditions.

o Minimization of equipment damage, downtime, and excessive fuel

consumption.
