Job Title: Mercedes Benz Hiab FN 503 Operator (1)


Nature of Contract: 12 months Fixed Term

Duty Station: Rumphi

Reporting to: Project Manager/Plant & Workshop Manager

Department: Fleet & Logistics

Job Purpose

The Mercedes-Benz HIAB FN 503 Operator is responsible for safely operating a Mercedes-Benz truck fitted with 

a HIAB FN 503 loader crane to load, unload, lift, transport, and position construction materials, equipment, 

machinery, and other heavy loads. The operator must ensure that all lifting operations are carried out in accordance 

with the crane load chart, safety regulations, manufacturer guidelines, and company procedures. HIAB loader 

cranes are designed for loading, unloading, lifting, and positioning construction materials and equipment on 

construction and industrial sites. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Crane and Vehicle Operations

• Operate the Mercedes-Benz HIAB FN 503 truck and crane safely and efficiently. 

• Load, transport, unload, and position construction materials, equipment, and machinery. 

• Perform lifting operations according to approved lifting plans and crane load charts. 

• Ensure proper crane setup, stabilization, and deployment of outriggers before lifting operations. 

• Maintain full control of loads during lifting, slewing, and placement operations. 

• Observe safe working loads and operating limits at all times. 

• Coordinate lifting activities with banksmen, riggers, supervisors, and site personnel. 

2. Safety Compliance

• Conduct daily pre-start inspections of the truck, crane, hydraulic systems, tyres, lifting accessories, and 

safety devices. 

• Ensure compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies. 

• Wear and enforce the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 

• Identify hazards and stop operations where unsafe conditions exist. 

• Ensure exclusion zones are maintained during lifting activities. 

• Avoid contact with overhead power lines and other site hazards. 

3. Equipment Maintenance

• Carry out routine maintenance checks and basic servicing of the vehicle and crane. 

• Monitor hydraulic oil, fuel, coolant, lubricants, and other operational fluids.

• Report defects, breakdowns, and maintenance requirements promptly. 

• Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle and crane equipment. 

• Complete daily inspection and maintenance records. 

4. Loading and Transportation

• Secure loads correctly before transportation. 

• Verify load weights and dimensions before lifting. 

• Ensure transported materials are safely delivered to designated locations. 

• Follow road traffic regulations and company transport procedures. 

• Assist with loading and unloading activities when required. 

5. Documentation and Reporting

• Complete daily equipment logbooks and inspection checklists. 

• Record fuel consumption, maintenance issues, and operational hours. 

• Report incidents, near misses, and equipment damage immediately. 

• Submit daily activity reports to supervisors. 

6. General Responsibilities

• Support construction, maintenance, and logistics activities as directed. 

• Participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings. 

• Maintain good working relationships with colleagues, clients, and site personnel. 

• Perform other related duties assigned by management. 

Qualifications

• Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE). 

Professional Qualifications

• Valid Malawi Driver's Licence appropriate for operating heavy goods vehicles (Class C, CE, or 

equivalent as required by company policy). 

• Certified HIAB/Truck-Mounted Crane Operator Training Certificate from a recognized training 

institution. 

• Defensive Driving Certificate will be an added advantage. 

• Occupational Health and Safety training will be an added advantage. 

Experience

• Minimum of 3–5 years' experience operating HIAB loader cranes or truck-mounted cranes. 

• Proven experience operating Mercedes-Benz HIAB trucks in construction, mining, logistics, utility, or 

infrastructure projects. 

• Experience in lifting construction materials, machinery, containers, and equipment. 

• Experience working on large civil engineering, road construction, building, or industrial projects is an 

added advantage. 

Skills and Competencies

• Strong knowledge of HIAB crane operations and lifting techniques. 

• Ability to read and interpret load charts and lifting instructions. 

• Knowledge of safe lifting procedures and rigging practices. 

• Good understanding of vehicle maintenance and inspection requirements. 

• Ability to assess load stability and lifting risks. 

• Good communication and teamwork skills. 

• Strong attention to safety and detail. 

• Ability to work under pressure and meet operational deadlines. 

• Basic report-writing and record-keeping skills
