POSITION: LOAN OFFICERS
Location: Lilongwe
OVERVIEW
SME Clinic, on behalf of its client, a leading licensed microfinance institution, is recruiting experienced Loan Officers to support its agricultural and agri-business lending portfolio.
The successful candidates will be responsible for originating, analysing, and managing group-based agricultural loans to smallholder farmers, agro-dealers, and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). The role also involves providing client training, monitoring loan performance, and ensuring ethical and efficient lending throughout the credit life cycle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Screen and assess agriculture loan applicants and process loan applications.
Conduct field visits with Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) and agronomists to assess farming operations and loan eligibility.
Train clients and solidarity groups in financial management, business management, and credit management.
Structure appropriate loan products and prepare loan documentation for approval.
Monitor loan repayments and manage loan portfolios.
Follow up on overdue accounts and support loan recovery processes.
Build relationships with farmers, agro-businesses, community leaders, and government extension services.
Promote agricultural loan products and financial literacy within communities.
Ensure compliance with lending policies and prepare regular performance reports.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants should possess:
Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Agronomy, or a related field.
A Diploma in Microfinance, Business Administration, or a related discipline with strong agricultural experience will also be considered.
At least three (3) years' experience in microfinance or banking with significant exposure to group lending.
Proven experience in agricultural lending and working with rural smallholder farmers.
KEY SKILLS
Strong knowledge of credit analysis, agricultural production, and risk management.
Ability to prepare and analyse cash flows, repayment plans, and financial statements.
Experience with group lending methodologies.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work extensively in rural areas.
Strong integrity, customer service, and decision-making skills.
Ability to ride a motorcycle with a valid rider's permit.
DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES
Experience working with women-led groups, youth organisations, or VSLAs.
Familiarity with mobile money platforms and digital lending systems.
Practical knowledge of crop or livestock production.
