BCMCF-M is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of:
Position: Staff Nurse
Location: Cancer Centre – Kamuzu Central Hospital
Reports to: Nurse Manager
Contract Duration: 1 year, renewable based on performance and funding availability
Status: Full-time (40 hours per week)
Position Summary
The Staff Nurse will provide evidence-based nursing care to children with cancer and blood diseases and participate in training, research, and quality improvement activities under the supervision of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology (PHO) Head of Nursing.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide evidence-based nursing care to children with cancer and blood diseases.
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, including vital signs, subjective history, and head-to-toe assessments.
- Administer chemotherapy in accordance with established PHO nursing practice guidelines and use of the chemotherapy checklist.
- Prepare chemotherapy in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), unless this responsibility has been assumed by a dedicated oncology pharmacy.
- Manage the clinical space, patient flow, supplies, and equipment in liaison with ED and other administrative staff.
- Administer supportive care and other prescribed medications.
- Perform phlebotomy for laboratory investigations and research samples.
- Conduct structured handovers during shift changes.
- Assist physicians with PHO-related procedures and monitor patients throughout procedures.
- Provide patient and family education on the patient's condition, treatment plan, and appropriate home care before discharge.
- Participate in PHO nursing education, including workshops, in-service training, bedside teaching, and mentorship.
- Participate in the development and revision of PHO nursing curricula.
- Engage in continuing nursing education (CNE) activities.
- Participate in PHO research activities, including collection of research samples and provision of nursing care according to research SOPs.
- Ensure ethical conduct of research and report suspected unethical research activities.
- Educate patients and families regarding participation in research.
- Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) projects, including identification of QI needs and implementation of Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must have:
- Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- A current nursing license through all appropriate regulatory bodies.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in nursing.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with staff.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience participating in quality improvement projects in a clinical setting.
